Subway Concerto
Recently, I watched an Asian man play a stringed instrument in the Union Square Subway Station waiting for the Number 6 Train, and was amazed at his musicianship, skill, and love for his special instrument. People seemed to encircle him, but the audience ever changed, as they had to board their trains. I did board my train as well, though I wish I wasn't late for my assignation. I watched from behind him and saw his utter disappearance in the obsession of each softly struck note, waiting for the next in instants of glory, every note stilled the senses and engaged every neuron of my brain to find in my mind a wonder at his consistent persistent playing with stamina and his hopes to please an audience of strangers. The instrument he played is called a "Yangqin".
Subway Concerto The image of the musician is still vivid Struck on my waxed tablet ... memory So unreliable at times - not here, not now. After almost a week no diminution of his Art's mark on my mind's recalling, pulling From deep in the well of sounds to ripple And a hologram of this splendid Musician Steals away my senses again Playing an instrument of Asian descent, Not a dulcimer as some might say but A yangqin of so much latent feeling Expressions of finding infinity Stringed with complexity struck with Reflexes and controlled power where Sounds abide to crystallize into music Filling the subway station space As never before as people gathered Around the man with looks of curious Awe -- eyes darting from the gray haired Asian man and the strange stringed Instrument he played with the skill Of a master of mystical vibration In the midst of those noisy trains' distraction Coming in and out on track for destinations Known to all who listened to the man But not the man who was destined To play even recognizable tunes To comfort those late travelers Strung at Time's taut pleasure.
The Musician of all Subway Concertos hesitates ... He looks down as though he dropped a thought Or misplaced a favorite note borrowed from Those spheres that the ancients used to revere Then a suddenness of resolution and he strikes A new melodious foray much to Time's taut dismay.

"Colors"
by Amos Lee
A beautiful song ... I could listen to it forever ... "Colors" was featured in the movie "Just Like Heaven". Here are the lyrics:
Colors
Yesterday I got lost in the circus Felling like such a mess Now I'm down I'm just hanging on the corner I can't help but reminisce When you're gone all the colors fade When you're gone no New Year's Day parade You're gone Colors seem to fade
Your mama called she said that you're down stairs crying Feeling like such a mess Yeah I hear you you're in the background bawling What happened to your sweet summertime dress
I know we all, we all got our faults We get locked in our vaults and we stay But when you're gone all the colors fade When you're gone no New Year's Day parade You're gone Colors seem to fade Colors seem to fade Yeah
